Thomaston Library News

Qi GONG on Saturday Mornings

Tim English is back at the Thomaston Public Library for his second year leading a free class in Qi Gong. Qi Gong is a traditional Chinese exercise with roots in traditional Chinese medicine, martial arts, and philosophy. The practice of Qi Gong aligns breath, movement, and awareness and calms the mind. It is said to strengthen the immune system as well as help with balance and flexibility.

Class is held Saturdays from 11:30 A.M. -12:30 P.M. in the Thomaston Academy's gym. Qi Gong is beneficial to people of all ages, and no experience is required to attend. Comfortable clothing should be worn for the gentle, graceful practice of Qi Gong.

Intergenerational Book Club to Discuss The Round House
On Tuesday, December 17th, at 2:30 PM, the library’s Intergenerational Book Club will discuss The Round House by Louise Erdrich.
One Sunday in the spring of 1988, a woman living on a reservation in North Dakota is attacked. The details of the crime are slow to surface as Geraldine Coutts is traumatized and reluctant to re-live or reveal what happened, either to the police or to her husband, Bazil, and thirteen-year-old son, Joe.
In one day, Joe's life is irrevocably transformed.  He tries to heal his mother, but she will not leave her bed and slips into a solitary abyss. Increasingly alone, Joe finds himself thrust prematurely into an adult world for which he is ill-prepared.
While his father, a tribal judge, endeavors to wrest justice from a situation that defies his efforts, Joe becomes frustrated with the official investigation and sets out with his trusted friends, Cappy, Zack, and Angus, to get some answers of his own. Their quest takes them first to the Round House, a sacred space and place of worship for the Ojibwe. And this is only the beginning.
The Round House was a Washington Post Best Book and a New York Times Book of the Year. The novel won the 2012 National Book Award for Fiction
On the third Tuesday of every month, the Intergenerational Book Club, a group of men and women of all ages, comes together to share their opinions and ideas about the book selection. Extra copies of the books are purchased by the Friends of the Thomaston Public Library from the Annual Appeal funds. We thank you for your donations. All are welcome at the Thomaston Library on December 17th at 2:30 p.m. If you live in Thomaston and would like to attend but need a ride, please call the library at 354-2453 a week before the discussion date.

Trains on Display at the Library

"A section of the new train display includes a model house and shed."

The library is fortunate indeed to display, once again, the model trains of Neil Shively and Leroy Jones, with contributions from Henry Groth as well. This year’s display has been embellished with little streetlights, lit train interiors, additional backdrop and photos, and much more. The display well be in place through December and January.
The photos on display include a view of the Grafton, West Virginia rail yard; a photo from Railpace magazine showing a B&O coal train; and a photo of a Berkshire stam locomotive owned by Henry Groth. Also on the upper level are four scales of model trains on display. A “live” steam locomotive is represented in the G scale, an Amtrack train in the O scale, a B&O freight train in the HO scale; and an Alaska RR train in the N scale.
The lower level scene depicts a small town with both freight and passenger rail service during the 1950s- 1960s. The passenger train is stopped at the station where it connects with a local self-propelled car, known as a “Budd” car, manufactured by Budd Corporation. The yellow car is a “Sperry Railcar” owned by Sperry Railservice and used to inspect rail track. Please stop by to see this new and improved display.
