Thomaston Library News

QI GONG on Saturday Mornings
Tim English is back at the Thomaston Public Library for his second year leading a free class in Qi Gong. Qi Gong is a traditional Chinese exercise with roots in traditional Chinese medicine, martial arts, and philosophy. The practice of Qi Gong aligns breath, movement, and awareness and calms the mind. It is said to strengthen the immune system as well as help with balance and flexibility.
Class is held Saturdays from 11:30 A.M. -12:30 P.M. in the Thomaston Academy's gym. Qi Gong is beneficial to people of all ages, and no experience is required to attend. Comfortable clothing should be worn for the gentle, graceful practice of Qi Gong.

Cottonwood Bark Carvings on Display
A whimsical collection of cottonwood-bark carvings by Wayne Keiderling of Warren is currently on display at the Thomaston Public Library. No two of these hand-carved items are alike. The collection includes hobbit houses – designed, Mr. Keiderling reports, to help with the current shortage of hobbit housing – as well as other small buildings and structures, carved seabirds and ducks, an elephant, and tiny owl carvings that fit in the palm of your hand.
Mr. Keiderling uses bark taken only from dead trees found in various locations throughout the United States and Canada, including Maine. He has been carving in wood for approximately four years and is a member of the Penobscot Bay Carvers and Artists Association and the Maine Wood Carvers Association. Mr. Keiderling is an avid musician as well. His wood-carvings will be on display at the Thomaston Public Library through the month of November.

Intergenerational Book Club to Discuss
Pink Chimneys at Thomaston Public Library
On Tuesday, November 19th, at 2:30 PM, the Thomaston Public Library's Intergenerational Book Club will discuss Pink Chimneys by Ardeana Hamlin.
Taking place in 19th century Maine, Pink Chimneys is the saga of three strong-willed women who, although trapped by the mores of their time, make peace with the injustices of the era and eventually triumph.
Set against the backdrop of temperance crusades, emerging statehood, and the explosive economic and political importance of Bangor when it was the lumber capital of the world, Pink Chimneys captures the romance and excitement of Maine's colorful history in a story that interweaves the lives of a midwife, a madam, and a young seamstress with a mysterious connection to both.
On the third Tuesday of every month, the Intergenerational Book Club, a group of men and women of all ages, comes together to share their opinions and ideas about the book selection. Extra copies of the books are purchased by the Friends of the Thomaston Public Library from the Annual Appeal funds. We thank you for your donations. All are welcome at the Thomaston Library on November 19th at 2:30 p.m.

Author of Somali Piracy Thriller to Speak November 19

On Tuesday, November 19, at 7 PM, local author and retired U.S. Navy Captain Bob Branco will appear at the Thomaston Public Library. Mr. Branco will talk about his new book, Strike from the Deep, and share a slide-show that provides real-life background to his gripping new thriller.

The plot of Strike from the Deep involves Somali pirates, who capture giant oil and gas tankers off the coasts of Arabia and Africa and hold them for record ransoms. When an international task force responds to the piracy, an entirely new type of war-at-sea ensues.

Recently selected as the Editor's Choice for Maritime Reading by the international magazine The Maritime Executive, Strike from the Deep has been collecting accolades, including this praise from Rear Admiral Tom Marfiak of the U.S. Navy:

"Bob Branco's book deserves to be read by all those who may think the Arabian Gulf is just another body of water. It is a complex weave of politics, with various nationalities vying for the upper hand. Patrolling those waters is not for the faint of heart...."  Another review praises the book for providing "a better understanding of the pirates of Somalia -- who they are, why they are pirates, and how they are being manipulated by outsiders . . .."

Mr. Branco served in 42 countries all over the world during his 25 years of service with the U. S. Navy. He was Captain of the USS Molala ATF-106 and was deployed to Vietnam in 1972. He was Captain of another ship during the 1985 Persian Gulf War between Iran and Iraq. In his last tour, Mr. Branco was assigned to the Joint Staff at the Pentagon during the first Gulf War in 1990 -1991.

Saltwater Film Society Screening of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

It's time to watch this hilarious Thanksgiving classic -- and you can do so at 6:30 PM on Thursday, November 21 (exactly one week before Thanksgiving) at a screening hosted by the Thomaston Public Library.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, a 1987 comedy directed by John Hughes, has become a Thanksgiving staple. The story is brought to life by John Candy and Steve Martin in the leading roles. Made before the days of cell phones and GPS units, the film deftly illustrates the pains of travel and is peppered with funny  moments and dialogue. Steve Martin plays a straight-laced and high-strung marketing executive desperate to get home in time for Thanksgiving. John Candy plays the happy-go-lucky shower-curtain-ring salesman whose hapless actions generate mayhem, turning the film into a lampoon-like comedy.

The Saltwater Film Society will be showing Planes, Trains, and Automobiles in Room 200 of the Thomaston Academy.
